Tonatiuh (Aztec Sun God) Original: Acrylic Razor Etching on Hardwood This graphic is a mashup of the center of the Aztec Calendar Stone linked to the Aztec sun god, Tonatiuh, and festivities dedicated to him. Tonatiuh's bifurcated tongue is represented as an obsidian knife, which indicates that a sacrifice was required so that the sun would continue its movement in the sky. At Tonatiuh's sides are four boxes with the symbols of the preceding eras, or suns, along with the four directional signs containing animal totems considered to have sacred power.
