Melissa Beck's work encompasses sculpture, installation and time-based media using found objects, paint layers, ceramics and woodworking. She is interested in the repeated use, routine, and familiarity of everyday functional objects and food items and the human understanding of these entities. During her years living in Brooklyn, she was drawn to the excessively painted surfaces in the subway and old apartments and applied this method to objects in her studio. Over the years, she has evolved this method applying it to a variety of objects and expanding the concept of layers, freezing moments in time and obscuring our perceptions of the everyday. She is based in Orange County, CA and is an art professor teaching courses in design, color theory and sculpture.
