Continuing in the visual arts tradition of his father and grandfather, Read Lockhart dives into his paintings and drawings layering oils on canvas and graphite on paper to reveal undeniably compelling images. His studies in the realist tradition of the Renaissance masters have enabled his work to unveil delicate nuances of places, objects, and people.
Born in Lake Bluff, Illinois, Lockhart is the son of David Leland Lockhart, photographer, woodworker, and designer and is the grandson of the late American wildlife painter James Leland Lockhart. Although the visual arts were far from his mind during his undergraduate career at St. John's College, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Lockhart soon discovered his love of drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He then spent a year studying drawing at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Returning to the United States, he continued his work amongst the hustle and bustle of New York City; escaping occasionally to the vast Southwest. Lockhart spent time assisting established New York City painters: Michael Grimaldi, Christopher Pugliese, Andrew Reese, and Steven Assael, as well as spending a summer working with painter, Tony Ryder, in Santa Fe.
