With qualifications and a background in design, New Zealand artist Rebecca Hawthorn swapped a career in the fashion industry to become a full-time artist in 2018.
Rebecca’s work is influenced by a love of moody atmospheres, her fascination with consciousness and the evolution of humanity, and the beauty of the natural world.
Rebecca’s floral paintings are created using a process driven method which involves many layers of brightly hued acrylic paint. The paint is thickened with molding paste and applied over several sittings with brushes and palette knives to create a richly textured surface. These layers are then buried under thin coats of paint which are wiped away and sanded back to reveal the floral shapes beneath. As the layers are sanded back, curious and surprising combinations of colour are revealed as different levels of the history of the painting are exposed.
Rebecca graduated with a Diploma in Design from Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland in 1995. She went on to study Fashion Technology at the Auckland Institute of Technology. More recently Rebecca has twice undertaken the Creative Visionary Program run by Nicholas Wilton.
