ABOUT
EDUCATION

Sarah Carr is a fiber artist and designer based in Seattle. Born and raised in rural West Virginia, she lived in Pittsburgh, Boston, and Philadelphia before moving to the West Coast in 2020. While the forests of her childhood are very different from the towering conifers of the Pacific Northwest, the patterns and textures of nature continue to be a primary inspiration for her work.

Sarah’s first tuition in fiber art, including soft sculpture, macrame, and corn husk dolls, came from her mother Susan, a public school art teacher. At Marshall University, Sarah learned felting, weaving, spinning, and dyeing techniques from Michael Cornfield, and earned a degree in Anthropology. She became fascinated by the properties and possibilities of wool, and after years of experimentation with wet and needle felting techniques arrived at her current process.

Sarah’s work can be found in private collections and commercial installations on both coasts. In addition to her fine fiber art, she is the Artistic Director of the theater company WeftWorks, where she creates costumes, puppets, and fiber sculptures for performance, as well as choreographing and designing productions.

BA Anthropology, Minor in Art with emphasis on Textiles, Marshall University 2001
