Hi there, I'm Sher.

I am a Caribbean-born studio artist residing in both the USA and UK. I grew up in New York City and was formally trained at the historical Art Students League of New York. Having won various regional and city-wide art competitions in my youth and exhibiting at the age of 15, I pursued a degree in Digital Media Communications and Graphic Design. After becoming a freelance designer and photographer, I worked with various independent record labels and artists in A&R. After a long haitus from the art world, the solitude of the lockdown brought me back to my artistic roots and I re-engaged with my love of art and design.

The Art Students League of New York

I have been trained in fine arts, including painting, watercolors, ceramics, sculpture and photography but chose to work specifically in pastels because I loved the physical feeling and process of creating tangible artwork, something that I deeply missed about creating artwork digitally as a designer. I’ve always loved the smells of paints, inks and art supplies and as every artist can attest to; there's nothing more inspirational than seeing fresh stock, charged for creativity.

Currently, I use a spectrum of professional premium pastels that include hard, soft, oil and pan pastels to graphite, charcoal and Conte pencils from the world's best suppliers because I care about the quality of my artwork. Art is great, but much better when it lasts longer!

For many artists, it's the beginning of their piece; but for me, it's the completion of my piece. There are limitations and confines to using these as oppose to the abandonment of oils and paint but it's within that chosen space that I exercise discipline within my artwork.

The pastel series "Apparitions of Blues Past" was exhibited at the Contemporary Art Space at the York Hospital, York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in late 2023.

Why Blues?

I wanted to create an understanding and a reverence for the individuals that contributed to and influenced the music that we listen to today. I wanted to bring these icons back into conscious view and I wanted to capture the essence of their own “Blues“ in their portraits. A lot of these older Blues musicians have either 1 or 2 photos of them existing and my challenge was to imagine what they looked like in real life; to draw out, pardon the pun, the emotion of Blues on their face and amplify their own emotions towards their genre.

These are exceptionally powerful when paired with the songs that inspired their images. I invite the viewer to listen to the track that I played when creating each piece so that there is an audio-visual connection to the contemplative experience.

Some of the proceeds from the earnings of this series are being donated to the National Health Service (NHS) as a gesture of gratitude for the hardworking and selfless staff of the NHS.

It's my heartfelt thank you to the NHS staff and for the work you do everyday to keep peopl...
