Sofia Barão

My work is an inner journey through personal and collective mythologies and symbolisms. I strive to capture a trace of the soul, even as I remain aware of its ephemeral nature. For me, color and texture form the bridge between matter and spirit, the conscious and the unconscious, transcendence and immanence.

By placing the cycle of life—birth, metamorphosis, death, and rebirth—at the heart of everything, I explore and question the threads that link the intimate self to the collective archetype. Originally from Portugal but living in France, my history with Saudade—that untranslatable, nostalgic melancholy—is my foundation.

I grew up surrounded by threads; my mother, a professional knitter, passed on much more than technique: she bequeathed to me the "language of the hands." I often work in series, employing a diverse range of media, from watercolor and oil painting to botanical dyes, textiles, embroidery, and paper but at present, my practice is crystallizing around textile media.

At the core of my practice lies a reflection on memory in all its forms, carried largely by the materials that have marked my personal history. My work is, ultimately, a quest for that invisible and mystical part that dwells within us.
