About Stanko Ropić

Color for Life | An important aspect in my art work is the search for soulful colors. Colors are touching souls - they show us the way and give us an idea of what infinity can be. Many color awareness paintings are created in series that relate to each other, they are characterized by similarity rather than by the narrative, which does not play a role in my art. By concentrating on the NOW, or better: by being all-one in the creative process, the soul power can flow into the work and curdle into snapshots, which then get their way into freedom as witnesses of this creative work.

Play & Creativity
As a child, still fully involved in the beauty of simple life on a Slovenian farm, without electric light, but candlelight, no running water, but clear, fresh water from the well and no central heating, but the cozy warmth of a tiled stove (at least in winter) – so under simple living conditions, but in the game, in nature there were breaks with the family when the time came and I was just 6 years old. The desire for some relief, for a little luxury in being there, prompted my mother to go to Germany. The call of the later stepfather, who had 5 children in Germany alone, was too tempting. I lost sight of the two bigger siblings there, my brother came to relatives like me. The little sister was allowed to go on the trip with her while I was housed at the age of 6 with my aunt and uncle in the neighboring town. After a year I was allowed to follow in Southern Germany, but the social apartment hardly offered any space for the existing family of eight, so the decision to move me to the Catholic children’s home made sense from this perspective.

Change & Creation

For the second time my way into the unknown was – this also turned out to be a stroke of luck since the schooling and the compulsion to learn the German language – apart from me, nobody spoke Slovenian in this home – as a kind of “learning acceleration” acted and I was then empowered to speak German but at the same time deprived of Slovenian. Now that I am writing these lines over 50 years have passed and the desire for an interpretation of how and why my art looks like and why this form of creation … the seed for expression in the present could have been planted in these times of change … For me, the greatest miracle is that beauty can grow out of pain.

Colorfield Painting (Farbfeldmalerei) means: working on and with color to discover the unexpected part of the inner soul and the bigger soul of us all. So the picture will start to breathe and to pulsate and interact with the visitor while watching it.

Inspired by the study of "Goethe: Color Theory" and the art work of abstract expressionism of die 60´s I found my main subject COLOR. Since then the fascination and curiosity of color has decreased more and more. On the contrary I get a sense of the picturesque in the infinite nuances and action fields of color.

Incarnated in Slovenia and the first steps taken in the vineyards of the Styrian Tuscany / southern foothills of Styria. The small and simple farmhouse, a residence of women (and children), without electricity or running water offered very reason for a little creature so much nature, so much to discover. Then, with the beginning of the next 7 years I was socialized in southern germany . Since drawing was always a passion and my desire to become an artist was soon to be sprouted there in a corner of the soul – this seed is now bearing fruit in the form of Color Awareness Painting or Color Field Painting.

Because it was even then not very easy to take the threshold to the academy, then the path of the Free Art School in Stuttgart, and then the University of Tübingen towards the groundbreaking training and studies at the “Kunst Seminar Metzingen” (now Free College Schwäbisch Hall ) to the formative experience things pertaining to the creation of fine art. Anthroposophical ideas, the expanded conception of art by Joseph Beuys, Integral Thinking influenced by Jean Gebser and a wonderfully inspiring and enthusiastic lecturers college students formed a superior class. The study in my own studio still lasts on….

Well Fine Art can serve as a decorative one, moreover, it brings the human to its noble development and creates worlds that have not yet been but are in fact already perceptible. And so the art work is on the one hand always a reference to the future – the condition is still to remain in condensed presence. In doing and staying aware creates a meditative attitude – and while once a painting shapes the image and on the other hand becomes a piece of fine art, the picture when finished will offer your open mind some sort of a “meditation image” for the open eye ( commonly expected to be common meditating with closed eyes ) …
