Sudhir Pillai was born in 1953 in Coorg, a charming hill station in Karnataka, India, known for its misty hills, green rainforests and vast tea and coffee plantations. The family soon moved to Orissa where Sudhir spent his childhood in small, secluded towns with no proper schools. He therefore never attended school but spent his days reading, painting, listening to the radio or romping around his backyard learning about the amazing world around him. After doing his Masters in Applied Economics, he moved from Orissa to New Delhi in 1975. Starting his career as a print journalist he worked as a sub-editor for various Delhi-based magazines but his interest soon shifted to designing. In 1985, he started his own a graphic design studio, that specialized in developing print communication material for International and Indian NGOs. Pursuing his interest in art, in late 2000, he started working with soft pastels, which he found an exciting new medium. Today, he paints mainly in oil and acrylic on canvas. His subject has always been people --ordinary people on the streets of the Indian metropolis. Sudhir Pillai lives and paints in Chittaranjan Park, New Delhi, India.
