Tom Baecker

I'm a visual artist with my studio based in Berlin, living with my wife and two boys on the island Tenerife / Spain, traveling back and forth whenever in need of doing so.

With the background of a classical mercantile apprenticeship i did quite a few completely differing jobs, ending up waiting tables and tending bars for 15 years in total, and wondering, what my "calling" could be. (Not saying, I didn't like my job. I loved it most of the times. But I knew, there was supposed to be something else).
Extensive travels during the german winter lead me to writing, which I first thought, would be the Tom-Baecker-thing. But back home I always couldn't keep that writing-spirit alive.
Three years after I had moved to Berlin in 2003, I bought a small automatic camera and began photographing.
Throughout these previous three Berlin years, I always had been considering doing so, because Berlin seemed to shout at me: "You've got this look - use it!"
I didn't expect the result though.
Everybody seemed to like, what I captured. So I decided to try my luck with some prints on a popular Berlin fleemarket. I sold 26 out of 70 and people would ask me to sign them.
I istantly knew, I had found, what I had so long been waiting and looking for (and remembering that day still gives me gooseflesh).
My mercantile roots convinced me, that postcards were a pretty good product, so I had my first postcards printed. T...
