Tom Wray

I was born in 1969 in London, and lived there until leaving art school at the age of twenty one. I then worked and saved up for a few months and bought a ticket to Brazil. This journey was the first of many that took up many years of my life. I devoted most of my time from then on exploring the world and it's many and diverse languages and cultural and geographical landscapes. I see my work partly as a collage, where I collect and reassemble echoes of many different places, experiences, cultures and geographies.
I returned again to Brazil, which I feel is my artistic spiritual home, now live in Sao Paulo, where I have been working within the very vibrant street art scene as well as exhibiting in more conventional spaces.
My work in addition to echoing the multicultural nature of my life experiences is concerned with something akin to a Jungian mythic vision of the world and the relationship between writing and pictorial representation. I work with imagined alphabets, and visual references and symbols both ancient and modern from varied cultures, using surrealist techniques to create images and sculptural forms.
