Jose Villegas

My current work is an exploration in finding form through a generative process. Each painting is restricted to a small set of rules dictating the scale and composition of forms and a range of colors. The basis for setting up the rules and process is entirely intuitive. Mechanical or computational technniques are avoided. The work is initiated with an automatic drawing, either as a field of scribbles or through a process of formal accretion. The rules of the painting are established as forms emerge out of the initial drawing.
