Daniel Voelker

As a collage artist, I’m interested in creating depth and manipulating the relationships of tone, line and shape. My process begins with several “automatic” charcoal drawings on paper which are sliced up and re-assembled in new ways. Each work evolves over several work sessions and shows a history of fragmented ideas which are unified into a new collective image.

My process goes back and forth between quick improvisational moves and carefully planned revisions.
A portrait, landscape, or still-life will often emerge during the process or sometimes all at once in the final composition. I like to engage the viewer by shifting perspectives and subjects, showing a work that is rich in its own history of ideas.
