Self-taught amateur artist born in 1967 somewhere near Sheffield, South Yorkshire and raised in Keighley a former West Yorkshire mill town. Not allowed to pursue a further education, afterschool he mulled around various jobs until starting as a mechanical and electrical draughtsman and making a career in engineering, then project management.
1984 to 2010 he developed his art in secret scared of being ridiculed, not many remain now (maybe an odd portrait) and will be signed J. Roberts. After a serious back injury in 2010 John started painting as a hobby for all to see and signed the works as Wellie, which stands for W (William) & Ellie his two youngest children. Experimenting with all mediums and styles especially pastels.
A lot of the works from 2010 to 2020 were geometric abstracts inspired by the draughtsman days but since the lockdown started in March he has been exploring oils with works taking any form figurative to landscapes and contemporary.
