Introduction to Vietnamese lacquer paintings

The main material used in lacquer paintings is the sap from gardenia tree. This tree is grown in many places in Southeast Asia. The variety of tree in Vietnam is called Rhus succedanea. It has a lot of sap and is very good for lacquer art. The sap of tree has been utilized for a long time in Vietnam for making handicrafts and household items. The lacquer for fine art in Vietnam was introduced and taught at the Fine Arts University, E’cole des Beaux Art d’Indochine, in Hanoi in 1925. In 1935, some artists from this university applied traditional lacquer technique and materials for paintings. They helped to expand the horizon of using lacquer in fine art.
