Yushan Liu

My works are mixed media paintings and collages that combine with drawing, found materials including oil painting, acrylic on plywood, canvas and acetate film. The paintings and collages include figurative imagery—both human and non-human—and uses dramatic yet subtle humor to explore the loss and disjunction we experience in our shifting between natural spaces to more built, developed urban ones. By reassembling, gathering and obliterating shapes, colors, texture, composition, to convey a flat/disordered time and space, my pieces reference the possibilities in our past and future of an intimate, dystopian and utopian co-existence among living beings. My work oscillates between the abstract and the representative, the post-minimalist and expressionist, between the visceral and the cerebral.

Born in Rizhao, China, Yushan Liu studied Tsinghua University in Beijing, where she received her Bachelors of Art degree in painting. Currently, she is an MFA candidate in Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University. Liu’s focus is painting, drawing, collage and sculpture.
