Mei Yim Low

I enjoy working from direct observation. Subjects vary from figures to interiors and landscapes., I take photographs of landscape and make watercolour sketches observing and recording what interests me about the view. These visual notes, together with the memories they reignite, are the springboard for more experimental paintings which rely on memory and intuition. Here, making the gestural marks and colours is a pleasure in itself. The challenge is in attempting to balance unpredictable colour runs, marks and space with a harmonious rhythm, allowing a suggestion of the place without stifling the 'voice' of the marks themselves.
