Pepijn Simon

Pepijn Simon (b. 1967, Amsterdam)

is a contemporary Dutch painter whose practice operates at the raw intersection of the human psyche and physical deconstruction. Stripping away the masks of conventional portraiture, Simon probes the deeper, often uncomfortable truths of the human condition. His visceral, high-contrast imagery invites direct comparisons to the existential weight and anatomical distortion of masters like Francis Bacon, yet translates these concepts into a distinctly modern, tactile visual language.
Driven by an intense curiosity about internal neurological conflicts and the inevitable decay of the body, Simon works in rigorous, thematic series. He deliberately abandons traditional brushes, choosing instead to manipulate, scrape, and sculpt thick layers of oil paint using alternative tools like credit cards. This aggressive, physical method allows him to build a unique "skin" upon his canvasses and signature aluminum plates, creating a dynamic play of light and deep texture that demands to be experienced in person.
