someone said: if you feel too much, make art. i sign into this. though i am not sure if artistic people really feel more, maybe they are just - for better and for worse - more aware of it.

i failed to get into art school in my early twenties, which forced me to do all kinds of things for a living, while going at night to paint an endless streak of faces. these are my passion, the faces of us humans, who we are stranded between knowledge and ignorance, hope and despair, grace and ... tragedy.

for about ten years i only used black and brown as colors, forcing me to paint light by painting shadow.i learned a lot through that.

my failing at art school made me terribly shy with all of this. so i didn’t dare to have models and paint them, because i was terrified by them afterwards looking at the piece. so i needed to learn the structure of the face by myself in my painting room. i always refused to use photographs, because i felt they were an easy cheat, because the do the hard lifting, namely translating the 3D world into a 2D image for you. so no photographs for me. meant staring at people in ghe subway, understanding the corners of a mouth, the shading on a temple, the wrinkles on a forehead and memorise them in order to paint them later at night. i harrassed many people by me looking i guess.

the most terrible thing was to see things i thought were great six months later and find out how bad they were. year a...
