Martin Brown – Gouache Landscapes & Still Lives

This collection brings together gouache paintings created over the last two years, inspired by architecture, landscapes, still lifes and places that have stayed with me.

Each work measures 42 × 30 cm and is painted as a one-of-a-kind piece on 300 gsm Arches paper.

Selected works are also available as limited edition fine art prints.
My work begins with the memory of place — a curve of coastline, the rise of a hillside village, the colour of late afternoon light on a white façade. I translate these impressions into geometric forms, simplifying the world into shapes, rhythms, and planes of colour.

Working with gouache allows me to build opacity and transparency, letting light slip between surfaces. Architecture becomes a kind of music: bridges, roofs and terraces arranged like chords. Landscapes and still lifes become quiet constructions of mood, recalling the sensation of travelling through Mediterranean towns or walking by the sea.

I paint to hold onto these moments — sun-warmed walls, the tilt of a small harbour, the shadows of August trees. My aim is not realism, but atmosphere. A sense of familiarity transformed. A world reduced to its essentials and rebuilt as something c...
