David APIKian (Armenia / France)
was born in Erevan, Armenia-USSR)
He received his Master of Architectural Degree from Viiralt Institute (Estonian Academy of Arts) in Tallin in 1982, after studying painting at the School of Fine Arts in Erevan and having worked at the Animation Studio SoyuzMultFilm in Moscow and at ArmenFilm in Erevan.
He started painting and modelling when he was a child, inspired by his uncle’s artworks. As a young man, he painted under the influence of French impressionists, his principal fields of interest were experiments with colours in movements;
In 1971 work in Studio ArmenFilm was interrupted by two years of military service during which he worked as an “artist” – he painted propaganda Posters.
Becoming a student in Tallinn, his friendship with Estonian artists, especially Tönis Vint, changed his perception of art. His main sources of inspiration were the masters of Russian Avant-Garde art movements, Vassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevitch, Iakov Chernikhov, Matyushin,... .
Then he progressed to geometrical themes.
In 1984, in Paris, hi uses Silicon Graphic Work station with 3D softwares for computer animation allowed him to synthesize his previous experience: painting,architectural design and animation.
He is presently living in Paris and works as a teacher in residence at the EAPM (Ecole d’Architecture Paris–Malaquais) where he led the project “Unbuilt Monuments”, developing computer graphics Visualization of unrealized early modern Soviet Avant-garde Architecture, he teaches also at the INA (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel)*.
*From 1998 to 2002 was an invited teacher at the DDS (Danish School of Design in Copenhagen) .
At the same time, he is continuing his visual research in the tradition of abstract representation (painting, graphics, experimental films and interactive installations).
David Apikian contributes regularly to international competitions and exhibitions and his artworks in many private collections.
Recently his abstract animation film “Animae” was received a Special Mention in Prize Simona Gesmundo for Animated Films Festival in Cetraro (Italy).

When you ask him why he is not working as an architect he answers that “some mathématiciens work on abstract maths and others on applied maths; some architects are building houses, others imagine abstract representation of architecture, one time called in Russia “paper architecture”.
Walking in the steps of Piranese and Iakov Chernikhov, he is an abstract architect.
He has exhibited in UK, France,Denmark, Italy, USA, Japon, Brasil, in numerous group and solo exhibitions (See below).
