Mark Sutherland

Born in 1966, Mark Sutherland is a South African British artist currently based in Europe, where he lives with his wife and son. He moved to England after his Graduate Exhibition at the University of South Africa in 2005.

Since 1998 he has been producing predominantly nudes and portraiture done traditionally in oil, as well as sensitive, bold and atmospheric drawings done in a wide variety of media. Drawing lies at the heart of Mark's artistic practice and he works from a live model at every possible opportunity. Mark also creates sculptures in wood, metal and felt. His human-scale mechanical sculptures are informed by the human body... as well as by stilted/distopian communication, and human-mechanical interfaces.

Mark treats each of his works as a voyage of discovery. He is not afraid to experiment with media and process, believing that this is vital for the continued development of any artist. As a result, each of his pieces embodies a unique combination of freshness with a professional execution. He carries this voyage of discovery through into the private lessons that he gives.

Mark has exhibited in many group exhibitions in South Africa, England and recently France too. His work is held in private and corporate collections...
