My name is Martin Henry Uren and I am fourty year old Wallsend born artist.
The main objective of this exhibition is to create world peace or at least a kind of peace, one to last for a thousand years.
There is a common bond of necessity between humans and flowers; we are both in search of light. The difference being flowers need sunlight and humans seek a light of a different kind, sacred light: Human light; human interaction; love.
My old Headmaster gave great morning assemblies during which he would relate moral tales. One of these morning stories, which stayed with me all my life, is about an island whose people were dying of hunger. Unfortunately, everybody on this island did not posses limbs above the waist and could not feed themselves. Frustratingly, the island had an abundance of food and strangely many, many wooden spoons. Tragically the people began to die of hunger.
One day, one person came up with one idea: if a friend, neighbour or stranger picked up one of the many wooden spoons, using their mouths and fed a person and then received the same charity, the hunger soon disappeared from the island.
Everybody began to live a peaceful, gracious and fulfilled life.
