Mary Thompson is an artist and photographer living in Somerset. Her work is concerned with the world around her, the land, the sea and what is hidden underneath the land. She has a series of photographs entitled “Caverns Measureless to Man” which showed the vast subterranean world of caves when mirrored to repeat the patterns. They created shapes and figures from man's collective unconscious, the world of myths and legends.
Her paintings are subtle invocations of the landscape, and its inhabitants.. She paints her expression of the moods and atmospheres of the world around her. The concept of the sublime
is an element from her photographic work which carries through to her painting. The ideas of vast expanses and the powers of natural elements are features of her work. She tries to express visions of light with the intricacies of land and sea in her watercolour and oil work. However she also used the landscape metaphorically to express moods and emotions. Her favourite artist is Turner who also painted visions of light and land and sea.
