Nicola Moorhouse

Through my paintings I aim to describe my physical experience with landscape and with the natural elements of water, air, and light; in particular my interaction with them through wild swimming or running in nature. Thus, my body engages with the natural environment whilst in a state of intense activity. The resulting sensation creates a bond between my mind, body and nature, offering me a unique perspective on the world, which I aim to share.

Through my relationship with water I focus on how light dances on its surface and travels through its translucent form. Water is a mesmerising vehicle for light and colour, densities, opacities and blueness, evoking a consuming sense of calm. However, there is a dark parallel to the seductive water, its power, the fatigue it can induce, the breath it can take and the unsustainable temperatures; a fascinating paradox and ever-threatening undercurrent in my work.

To create my paintings I pour viscous paint over an impermeable, gently undulating surface which settles to leave layers of sediment, upon the wooden framed boards.
