I was born in Solihull in 1957 and spent most of my formative years in Birmingham. My earliest art workbooks show a talent for pencil and charcoal drawing and a passion for churches and cathedrals is well represented in their pages. After taking my Art 'O' Level a year early at the age of fifteen, I dropped formal art education and went on to the Birmingham College of Food to study for an HND in Hotel and Catering.I met my wife, Lois, while working at a hotel in Buckinghamshire and we married in May 1979. After our wedding, we moved to Bury St. Edmunds where we worked as deputy management in this busy Suffolk market town for two years. We bought a tiny cottage in a village on the Norfolk Suffolk border which became our haven from a busy working life. During our time in East Anglia, I painted the flat landscape with its charming churches and the famous Rose Gardens and medieval ruins of the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds. In January 1981, we moved to the Isles of Scilly where we joined my Uncle and Aunt in running their busy and successful guest house.
