Drawing upon the legacy of the Old Masters, Charlie Colley’s intention is to capture the essence of the great painters and draughtsmen whose work encompasses from the Renaissance through to Romanticism. Not simply producing an exact copy, Colley attempts to explore the materiality of paint by fragmenting individual masterpieces. Through a combination of exploration by scraping, scoring, scumbling, impasto and incorporating new elements and visual imagery to each individual work, Colley creates an entire new image that only really hints towards the great paintings of Old.
Charlie Colley is a graduate of Leeds Arts University and has work in many private collections. He was selected for the Aon community art award and has exhibited at the Leadenhall building in London.
