Roberto Valcarcel

My works range from photorealist drawings to conceptual interventions. This diversity is deliberate on my part since I define my own oeuvre as radically eclectic.
For more than four decades, I have been using materials that are quite unconventional, like timber wood that had been previously used as packaging material. I strongly defie preset ideas established by the market, the art critics, the gallerists and the editors. I admonish the audience that neither the title of a work, nor its price, least its review can replace a direct appreciation and subjective interpretation of a work of art. More than inviting, I challenge the viewer not to use these gimmicks, but confront the oeuvre in solitude, trusting his senses, that he may even find a sense of humour in the works conveyed.

I was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1951, studied Graphic Design and Architecture in Darmstadt, Germany and live now in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.

I have shown extensively in galleries and museums worldwide, including exhibitions at the IMF Center in Washington DC, Casa de América in Madrid, The Mall Galleries in London, Dresdner Bank in Hamburg, Museo de Arte Moderno in Cali, Colombia and Museo de Bellas Artes in Chile.
I have also held over fourty solo exhibitions in important venues all over Bolivia including the Museo Nacional de Arte in La Paz, Fundación BHN, EMUSA Gallery, Galería Esart and Nota Gallery, to name just a few.
