Christo Stankulov

Christo Stankulov began working with photography in Bulgaria in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Over time, photography became for him a lasting field of experience and inquiry, both behind the camera and in the darkroom. His early participation in exhibitions and competitions in Bulgaria marked the beginning of a path that continued in France after 2008. There, he developed his work within an international context and took part in initiatives such as Zig-Zag’s Ateliers d’Artistes in Gentilly at the Maison de la Photographie Robert Doisneau. At the heart of his work lies the conviction that photography should not embellish the world, but bring it into sharper focus. His images unfold between observation and tension, between what is visible and the narrative that begins to emerge only when an image is held long enough before the eye. This is a body of work that functions like a bridge resting on three pillars - the reality, the document, and the artwork. This is a photography shaped by the love of looking and photographing, rather than by the urge to impose a vision at any cost.
