Julia Sutliff

My best paintings tend to happen when I’m outside and come upon an involving scene—trees leaning together for solace, reeds clustered in conversation. Robert Henri wrote that art happens out of a certain state of mind, and the brilliant colors and graceful gestures in nature put me in the best state of mind to paint.

I have an undergraduate degree in Modern Culture and Media from Brown, a Master's in English from the University of Maryland, and a Master's in teaching from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. I've also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art. I show my work in solo and group shows in Maryland and nearby states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and North Carolina.
