A childhood spent constantly moving has given me a yearning for setting down roots. My passion for tree planting and gardening has sparked my interest in nature and is the main inspiration for my paintings. It is an intuitive response to the continuous yearly cycle that is both different and yet reassuringly similar as the seasons progress. I find the promise of a new beginning each spring very uplifting and the slowing down at the end of the year a metaphor for the ageing process and life itself.
Drawing is important in my work and I like to show the bones of the structure of a painting through the layers. I use a limited palette of mainly neutral colours which reflect the harmony within nature. Acrylic paint is my main medium, although I also like to explore ideas through mono-printing and collagraphs.
In my work I am trying to capture a sense of what it is about the natural environment that makes it a constant source of inspiration and interest; the contrasts thrown up between the seasons, weather, changing light and the relationship between man and nature.
