Theodora Rowlands

I am a self-taught artist, based in Toronto. I was born and raised in Montreal, a vibrant, cosmopolitan and creative city, where my interest in art was fostered early on, in my childhood. The city's abundant galleries, museums and architectural heritage, inspired a love of art and culture.

I am inspired by the beauty of our natural world, its shapes, colours and spectacular landscapes. Many of my paintings depict picturesque settings in Quebec. I use brushes and palette knives in an impressionistic, expressive and at times semi-abstract way.

The act of painting for me, is to be completely absorbed in the moment as the canvas is transformed into the vision in my mind or my interpretation of a landscape. I am completely immersed in my work that I lose all track of time. In our hurried, frenetic word, I think of the time I spend painting as a gift, rooted in the present moment.

A few of my artistic influences are A.Y. Jackson and the Group of Seven, Jean-Paul Lemieux, Clarence Gagnon and Fracesco Iacurto.
