İsmail Çoban was born in Çorum, Türkiye in 1945.
Since 1971 he has lived in Wuppertal, Germany as a freelance painter and graphic artist.
In 51 years, Ismail Çoban created an extensive and internationally acclaimed body of work, which he presented in over 700 exhibitions in 33 countries.
His works include oil paintings on canvas, drawings, woodcuts, etchings and sculptures.
In order to support international young artists whose work can contribute to mutual understanding between Germans and migrants, Çoban founded the Ismail Çoban Foundation for the Promotion of Young Artists in 2006.
After completing an apprenticeship as a tailor and attending a secondary school in Istanbul from 1960 to 1965, İsmail Çoban trained as a primary school teacher. After a brief stint as a primary school teacher in Kurtalan/Ridvan in Eastern Anatolia, he attended the University of Applied Arts in Istanbul from 1965 to 1968.
In 1969 he completed an internship as a screen printer in Selb in Upper Franconia. From autumn 1969 to 1971 he attended the Wuppertal College of applied arts and crafts.
