I paint urban nocturnes. I am interested in exploring the individuals experience of the city at night. Recent paintings have focused on New York City, particularly Times Square. The vivid artificial lights are an area of interest as they differ wildly from the colours seen in nature and traditional landscape painting. I aim in my painting to explore colour as experienced in the modern city. Another area of interest is in finding the balance between representation and abstraction in my painting practice. I am not interested in an attachment to description or any kind of photorealism but rather in a more expressionist painterly approach. I aim for an energetic vagueness but to still capture the atmosphere of the nocturnal urban experience.
