Based in the vibrant cultural landscape of Taipei, Matheus Almeida is a self-taught artist whose practice is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy and Asian aesthetic traditions. His work explores the intersection between resilience and the human spirit, utilizing raw linen and cotton paper as primary canvases.
Almeida’s visual language is heavily informed by the Xiěyì (写意) technique—a gestural, 'freehand' approach to painting. Embracing the spirit of contemporary Asian ink art, he prioritizes vivid, soulful expression over rigid detail. His style is characterized as semi-abstract, where deliberate brushstrokes suggest form and movement, inviting the viewer to engage with the essence of the subject rather than its literal representation.
“The true painting does not reveal the art, even less something aesthetic, its a way to be”
Shí Tāo 石涛 (poet and painter of landscapes, 1642-1707).
While my technical mastery of painting is self-directed, my artistic education is deeply rooted in years of immersive study of Asian philosophy and internal martial arts. This unique background provides the physical and spiritual discipline reflected in every brushstroke:
Tai Chi Chuan & Gongfu: My practice of internal martial arts serves as the foundation for my gestural technique. The flow, balance, and 'Fa Jin' (explosive power) found in these disciplines are directly translated into the rhythmic movement of the brush on linen, allowing for a true 'freehand' expression.
Traditional Eastern Medicine: My studies in traditional medical philosophy have provided a profound understanding of human anatomy and the flow of energy (Qi). This knowledge informs my contemporary figurative work, focusing on themes of resilience and the inner strength of the human spirit.
Cultural Immersion in Taipei: My ongoing residency in Taiwan acts as a daily laboratory for aesthetic and philosophical refinement, where I bridge Western backgrounds with Eastern traditional wisdom.
