Sofo Berd – Artist Statement

I began painting at the age of two, and since then, art has been my language, my refuge, and my way of understanding the world. My formal journey started at VGIK in Moscow, where I studied Set Design and Animation, and later continued at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where I deepened my exploration of scenography and fine arts.

Throughout my career, I have moved fluidly between different creative fields—illustrating for major fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle Russia, Cosmopolitan Russia, Harper’s Bazaar, happy parents ecc, while also working in cinematography as a scenographer, assistant director, and in film production and distribution. My experience in cinema has profoundly influenced my artistic approach, infusing my works with a sense of storytelling, atmosphere, and visual poetry.

Watercolor and oil painting are my primary mediums, both reflecting the interplay between control and spontaneity. My work is deeply rooted in psychology, esoteric traditions, and the philosophy of light, exploring the boundaries between reality and imagination. Each painting is an invitation to a journey—where colors breathe, emotions surface, and the unseen finds its voice.
