Julia Flit is a Kazakhstani artist and photographer based in London whose practice explores memory, emotion, and transformation through photography, material experimentation, and conceptual image-making. Beginning her career in 2012, she worked internationally with leading jewellery designers, creating campaigns published across Condé Nast titles before shifting her focus during the pandemic toward fine art.
Her work centres on liminal states — moments where identity, perception, and the body feel unstable or in transition. Through underwater self-portraiture, Julia uses submersion as both a physical and psychological process, confronting fear, surrendering control, and exploring the fragile space between dissolution and rebirth. Water becomes both subject and collaborator, symbolising uncertainty, transformation, and the possibility of change.
Alongside photography, Julia has expanded into a multidisciplinary practice incorporating aluminium, silk, plaster, digital manipulation, and experimental 16mm. Through cutting, assembling, layering, and physical intervention, she examines how memory is altered, reconstructed, or obscured over time.
