In the American Midwest where I grew up, my options for self-expression were limited by the ethos of conformity which governed my social world. My first escape was through music. Studying ethnomusicology at UCLA opened my ears to nonwestern music. My works are layered with multiple meanings, juxtapositions that are unusual, pretty, startling, or whimsical. I mix detritus from my neighborhood with inexpensive, easily obtainable materials, using what I find around me to address issues that are part of my world.
I earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at UCLA in 1995. I then studied art at Los Angeles Valley College under the guidance of sculptor Jamison Carter. I now work as a visual artist, specializing in sculpture, both freestanding and wall-mounted, with an emphasis on textile manipulation.
