My practice works across materials to explore tension between control and care, fragility and endurance, positioning material, form, and process as sites of resistance and sustainability.

Hi, I am Anna Penning, a Germany-based artist working with sculptural ceramics.
Using refined processes and wild clay collected from urban soil, my work examines material hierarchies, embodied knowledge, and feminist tension. Positioned between craft and sculpture, the objects focus on presence, resistance, and quiet authority.
Clay is an ancient, charged material—earth shaped by time, labor, and touch.
I work with ceramic forms and with clay gathered from urban ground, material that carries compression, erosion, and memory.

My practice explores contrast as a feminist position.
Clear, reduced forms meet raw, collected earth. Control confronts resistance. What has been considered secondary—soil, vessel, craft, care—moves to the center.

Clay has long been situated between art and craft, often linked to the domestic and the feminine, and therefore devalued. I do not resolve this tension. I insist on it. The works claim weight, presence, and duration.

Femininity appears not as image, but as force: holding, shaping, enduring.

I was educated within a Waldorf framework, where artistic practice, material awareness, and embodied learning formed an early foundation.
I later completed formal training as a glass and porcelain painter, working intensively with handcrafted materials and traditional techniques.

I studied Art and Music at university level, developing an interdisciplinary practice grounded in visual art, sound, and process-based thinking. Parallel to my artistic work, I have been active for many years as an art and music educator, teaching in socially diverse and underserved contexts.

My artistic education is inseparable from lived experience. Alongside academic study, craftsmanship, and pedagogy, my practice has been shaped by motherhood. Raising two children has deepened my engagement with questions of care, material endurance, time, and bodily presence—experiences that directly inform my sculptural work.

This constellation of training, labor, and responsibility continues to shape my focus on material hierarchies, embodied knowledge, and feminist tension between craft, art, and cultural value.
