Rachel Jeffery

I have been making art for nearly thirty years, and in that time the natural world has never stopped surprising me. I grew up surrounded by the landscapes of Cornwall — its ancient coastlines, rock pools, cliff faces and wild headlands — and that deep connection to place has shaped everything I do. I paint the elements I connect with when I look out at a scene; the rhythms, textures, colours and forms that speak to me rather than a direct depiction of what's in front of me. Travelling through the rainforests of Costa Rica, the Caribbean islands and beyond has only deepened that fascination — there is always something new to discover when you really look.
I work in mixed media, layering surfaces, building texture and allowing the work to develop in ways I don't always anticipate. Creativity, for me, is a conversation — between the place, the materials and myself. It is rarely straightforward, often surprising, and that is exactly why I keep coming back to it. My paintings are concerned with freedom, with rhythm, with the feeling of being somewhere that takes your breath away.
