James Maiki

James Maiki is a London-based filmmaker and visual artist whose work explores the relationship between moving image and painting. With a background in directing, shooting and editing films across fashion, culture and editorial media, his visual language has been shaped by years of observing composition, texture and atmosphere through the lens of a camera.

Alongside his film practice, Maiki has expanded his creative work into painting, working primarily with acrylic on canvas while increasingly experimenting with encaustic techniques. By incorporating layers of wax into the surface, he explores new ways of building texture, depth and translucency within his compositions.

His paintings extend the same visual instincts that inform his filmmaking: an interest in mood, rhythm and the interplay of colour and form. The tactile qualities of wax introduce an additional dimension, allowing the surface of the work to hold traces of process, light and material transformation.

Working between mediums allows Maiki to move freely between motion and stillness, narrative and abstraction. His current practice focuses on pushing these boundaries, exploring how ideas developed through film can evolve into physical artworks on canvas.
