Paul Harvey

I first saw a welded sculpture when I was 15. It turned out to be a David Smith exhibition. I could not believe you could melt metal. I didn’t know what welding was. I got an oxy/acet torch kit and started cutting up old shopping carts for the frame work and using High C juice cans as my flat sheet metal to make brutalist art pieces. From there I started to make realistic pieces. For the next 65 years I would do metal sculptures and fish. I’m a self taught artist but I’ve taken numerous welding classes and exams becoming a master welder by 20. I mixed metal sculpting and traveling around the US doing the top outdoor art shows until 1978 when I opened my first art gallery in Naples Florida. I have continued my dream job as an artist and combined it with my love of th3 oceans and fishing becoming a charter fishing guide and eventually getting my master captains lisc. A lot of what I see daily I incorporate into my sculptures. After starting my torch fired enamel work 4 years ago I’ve found a way to take my sculptures to a whole new level. My last two bird sculptures I’m very happy with. Using the bright glass colors fired onto the copper give all my work a whole new way to go. Self taught. Was never to interested in school. I do love to read and learn and I have been fortunate enough to have a number of mentors in Naples that have helped me in many ways but the best has been the education and introduction to amazing art collections.
