K Dewayne Mercer

I have minimal formal education in art, having majored in architecture and ultimately receiving a degree in cosmetology. I am a self-taught artist working primarily with oil and cold wax medium. My work tends to lean abstract with an emphasis on line, color and texture.

By using tools such as squeegees, brayers and even my fingers, I create surfaces that invite the viewers to engage visually and tactilely. These surfaces with the textures revealing the underlying layers always remind me of an aged door or wall from either childhood or travels to old cities with structures rich in color that have been worn down with an ancient history and left in a state of beautiful decay.
