Jim Simpson

I studied at art colleges in Newcastle and Cambridge (U.K.), where my curiosity expanded far beyond making images. Those years opened the door to a lifelong fascination with art in all its forms — the ideas, the movements, the many “...isms” that shape how we see and interpret the world.

Graphic design and typography soon exerted their own gravitational pull, leading to a long and successful career. That visual discipline remains deeply embedded in my artwork today. Strong graphic structures, clarity of form, and a sensitivity to visual language continue to guide my process.

My work begins intuitively: quick drawings, exploratory marks, and the search for shapes that feel alive. From there, I refine and balance flat and bold forms, warm and cool colour, light and dark, to create compositions that offer immediate access to shape, rhythm, or spatial tension.
