Dick Berckenkamp

Dick Berckenkamp is a visual artist from Rotterdam, Netherlands whose work explores the complex relationship between time and movement. His primary theme is how we move through time, both literally and abstractly. Inspired by modern dance and music, he captures physical movement in his works. At the same time, he explores abstract movement and how we experience the fleeting nature of moments and how these are shaped in our memories.

He works on canvas or paper, using a variety of materials such as paint, charcoal, ink, watercolor, and spray paint. His artworks range in size from small to monumental.

Straddling the line between recognizable figuration and pure abstraction, the dynamics in Berckenkamp's work follow the movement of time. His style can be classified as lyrical expressionism. Berckenkamp: “For me, it's not so much about depicting reality as it is about expressing what occupies me as a human being.”
