Kunchok Ma

Chinese-born artist based in Canada, exploring Himalayan symbolism and modern consciousness.
Official member of Federation of Canadian Artists.

Kunchok Ma is a visual artist whose work explores the symbolic and spiritual dimensions of human experience through expressive, intuitive oil painting. Trained in classical drawing and painting for over a decade in his early years, then studied at the Beijing Film Academy (MA in Cinematography). In 2015, he founded RUGU Studio in Beijing, dedicated to preserving analog darkroom techniques through portraiture and still life.
Since 2020, Ma has returned fully to painting, merging geometric abstraction with dreamlike figuration and mythic imagery. His work draws inspiration from meditative visions, natural forms, and the transcultural iconography of divine feminine and guardian spirits. Layering intuitive gesture with symbolic order, Ma’s canvases evoke a world where the psychological and the spiritual intertwine.
