Sarah Mulligan

I am a Los Angeles based metal artist. I create metal sculptures using scrap metal which I like to call being an Abscraptionist, the first Abscraptionist. Abscrapt art as I call it, entails using 20 gage to 22 gage pieces of steel which I weld together in intricately woven collages that are usually three dimensional and made to display as wall art. Then I paint the pieces using paint enamel , spray paint, also acrylic paint. These pieces are reinforced by rebar making them heavy and do need to be installed safely on your wall, preferably with the screw being in a stud so it can take the pressure but you can use drywall backings safely for the smaller pieces. I started doing this about seven years ago now and I find it to be such a a blessing. I'm constantly entertained and perfectly happy to be in my own company for hours, if not days at a time. I usually find my inspiration in the music I listen to while I'm working , which is mostly House Music from DJs I am inspired by. I cannot create without music, these things go hand and hand. I do not think about what to do before I do it, I find inspiration in the moment, usually dancing around with my headphones on or a loud speaker blasting, depending on the time of day.
