Why do I create art? The simplest answer I have is that I feel compelled to be the creative structural engineer of my mind's eye.
I am a serious contemporary ocean artist who makes playful sculptures.
My interest in working with resin and fibreglass developed from my passion for surfing and kitesurfing, and was at first about solving a problem such as repairing a surfboard or developing specialist accessories for my boards to improve my traction on the waves. I surf large waves and there is no room for error.
My art draws from my experience interacting with waves and ocean creatures and I create contemporary minimalist forms inspired by that. My background as a sailor compels me to pursue disciplined forms that are honed by their extreme environments, while my passion for ocean sports expresses my sense of playfulness.
I have always been drawn to extreme landscapes and I currently live in a remote coastal village called Pearly Beach on the Southern tip of Africa where the wild Southern Ocean brings its weather straight from Antarctica and where two of the world's sea currents meet. Before that I worked at sea for twenty years living and working in extreme landscapes such as the Bahamas and the Caribbean working on private yacht...
