Nadiah Nas

An artist based in Malaysia. Painting began as a habit she returned to instinctively since childhood, and over time became a space she enters during periods of sadness. Rather than functioning as a form of release, painting serves as a quiet place where emotions are allowed to remain unresolved.

Her work carries a sense of heaviness and isolation, drawn to moments of emotional withdrawal — solitude, distance, and the hollow feeling that follows disconnection. In recent works, symbols such as broken chess pieces appear as quiet remnants of personal experience, reflecting pause and internal negotiation rather than narrative events.

Although Nadiah works with human figures in digital and traditional drawing, she deliberately avoids human presence in her oil paintings. This absence allows emotion to exist without a body, creating space for viewers to project themselves into the work.

Her subjects may appear whimsical or gentle on the surface, sometimes bordering on fairytale-like imagery. Beneath this softness, the emotional tone remains somber and fragile. Oil paint is central to her practice, allowing time, depth, and hesitation — qualities that mirror the emotional states she works within.
