John Ruggieri

I'm a portrait artist based in Jacksonville, Florida, where I create expressive, story-
driven works that celebrate the people around me—especially fellow creatives.

Growing up with a hearing impairment, I turned to drawing as a way to
communicate when words fell short. That early need for connection still drives my
work today. My influences range from Norman Rockwell’s narrative depth to
Salvador Dali’s surrealism and Jenny Saville’s bold authenticity.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of showing my work in solo exhibitions in
Brooklyn, Southampton, and Newcastle, Australia, and being featured in
publications like Diafano Magazine. As Vice President of The Arts Center,
Jacksonville, I work closely with local artists, musicians, and performers to build a
thriving creative community. My latest portrait series focuses on these individuals
—their energy, stories, and spirit—capturing more than likeness. I believe every
painting should be a conversation between the viewer, the subject, and the soul.
